Evoking a Glamorous Era

Image
This stunning Venezia Lounge Chair was designed by Adam Tihany for the Pace Collection, and  manufactured in Italy by I4 Mariani. Its frame is constructed of polished solid mahogany woods with a gloss finish. The arms feature the strong use of solid carved wood with a refined crossed motif and striking mid-century modern design. The seat and back cushions are loose polyurethane foam bound with polyester fibers, upholstered in a cream fabric. The distinctive back of the chair is of cream colored leather decorated with corset lacing.  Views of my Venezia chair, including the stunning leather laced back, are also found here and here . In 1994, The Pace Collection published this advertisement to promote the chair: Dimensions: Height: 35.2 in (89.41 cm) Width: 37 in (93.98 cm) Depth: 27 in (68.58 cm) Seat Height: 17 in (43.18 cm) Arm Height: 24 inches

Classic Mahogany Breakfront

Image
Custom made in 1982, and faithful to the 18th Century Georgian III design, this stately breakfront cabinet offers both storage and display capabilities. The lower cabinet is raised on a plinth base, and features eight individual drawers that flank either side of two molded center doors with flame mahogany panels. Behind these doors is a large two-shelf space to hold larger, taller items.  The upper cabinet offers glazed, beveled glass doors below a dentil frieze cornice topped with the third piece, a removable  broken pediment. Glass shelves in the top section display books, collectibles and/or valuable dinnerware, under dimmable lighting.  This is a superb replica of English Georgian furniture, with authentic presence and proportions. Overall my cabinet is in good condition, wear consistent with age and use as shown: Measurements: Base: W72.5 inches x D17 inches x H31.5 inches Top: W74 inches x D20 inches x H58.5 inches

Vintage Rockers

Image
My very first purchase of a new piece of furniture, in the early 1970s, was a Bentwood Rocking Chair based on the design of  Michael Thonet . Over the years, I continue to love the look, and the experience of balancing on it while reading or hanging out. Pablo Picasso enjoyed balancing in his bentwood rocker as well: My vintage 1970s era Bentwood rocking chair (with the characteristic carved curved legs with woven cane back rest and seat all in natural wood tones) looks like these, although the bottom seat was damaged and has been 80% re-caned.  For my 40th birthday, Peter bought me another sculptural rocking chair, of bentwood oak laminate.  This 1960s Tendo Mokko (Japan) Heron high back rocking chair was designed by Mitsumasa Sugasawa. Of bentwood oak with original structure that is very strong and original upholstery that is damaged with a slash on the chair back, this chair is ready to be reupholstered. Post-war Patio Furniture

Image
Walter Lamb is best known for his revolutionary and widely loved patio furniture — he salvaged metal tubing from sunken ships in Pearl Harbor in the 1940s to create seating, dining, and lounging pieces for outdoor living areas. His enduring and classic mid-century furniture designs have adorned patios worldwide since then.  Lamb worked the shaped tubing and fittings he’d gathered from battleship wreckage into proper frames and wrapped the structures in marine-grade cotton cording to create comfortable, element-proof outdoor furniture. Ours have been wrapped in the highest marine-grade UV resistant rope to withstand the Hawaii sunshine. On the windy Kohala Coast, where sturdy pieces of furniture have blown away, these pieces remain in place during the most brutal gusts. Thanks to their clean, low profiles and nearly see-through construction, views are not obstructed or spoiled. Today Walter Lamb’s patio furniture has an esteemed place in the history of design . Pieces such as this are r

Three Generations of Emperors

Image
This exceptional set of porcelain figurines colorfully represents three generations of Qing Dynasty Emperors who were the most popular dynastic rulers in Chinese history. The Qing Dynasty was the last of the imperial dynasties of China, spanning the years 1644 to 1912. These three reigned from 1661 to 1796.  Kangxi (in blue), who reigned from 1662-1722, was the second Qing emperor and is the eldest of the three. Kangxi adopted much of the bureaucratic structure of the prior Ming Dynasty. He espoused Confucian political and cultural attitudes in order to assimilate into Chinese culture and reestablish peace and prosperity. His son, Yongzheng (in yellow) reigned from 1722-1735. During his reign he consolidated power, restructured institutions to eliminate corruption, and promoted commerce, science, philosophy, and the arts. But it was under Kangxi’s grandson, Qianlong (in deep red) that the empire reached the height of its power and widest geographic limits during the six decades of his

Fabulous Donghia End Tables

Image
I am selling this gorgeous pair of mahogany and rush end tables from the limited production Merbau collection designed by the esteemed John Hutton (1947-2006) for Donghia, circa 1995. All of Donghia’s furniture collections were produced in small quantities, but examples from this particular series are scarcely ever found for sale.  Mr. Hutton was Donghia’s design director from 1978-1998 and was responsible for many of the now iconic Donghia designs produced during that period. Although Hutton’s talent was always recognized within design and architectural circles, his influence and modern design work have been appreciated more recently by the mainstream.  Description: Stout heavy mahogany construction veneered in heavy rush style rattan. Mahogany case accents  contribute to their exceptional design, material selection and craftsmanship. All veneer is intact and complete. Retains the maker mark; Donghia is burned into the case bottom.  These tables (just like mine) are for sale on 1stDi
